“CBS Mornings” host Gayle King left it at “we shall see,” but Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce never attended the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday despite a report from the host speculating that he could.
Kelce was instead on the sidelines at Arrowhead Stadium for Kansas City’s final preseason game against the Bears.
King, reporting on-site in Chicago for the network, initially said during a segment that she hadn’t confirmed rumors about Beyonce or Taylor Swift performing, but she then revealed why the Swift rumors were “interesting” to her.
“I was told a couple of days ago that Travis Kelce also had reached out to the Harris campaign when it was first announced and said that he wanted to be here on the night that [Kamala] was speaking,” King said. “We’ll see if that is true.”
Other members on the set then mentioned that Kelce had a game.
“I know he has a game,” King said, “but that doesn’t mean he’s playing.”
Kelce didn’t end up playing against the Bears — the Chiefs rested the star tight end, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and most of their other starters — but he didn’t make the trip to Chicago, either.
In two cameos alongside Mahomes and the starters earlier this preseason, Kelce caught two passes for 15 yards, and one of those occurred on a nifty behind-the-back pass from Mahomes that, the quarterback claimed, stemmed from a botched route by his star tight end.
“I always told you it had to happen naturally,” Mahomes said following their 24-23 loss to the Lions on Aug. 17, according to the Associated Press. “I knew it was on target. It was just low. But like I said, it wasn’t like — I didn’t do it to look cool. I did it because I was like, pissed off [at Kelce], like why did you run that route like that? And it just worked out.”
Kelce’s latest offseason featured just about everything, from plenty of trips to see girlfriend Taylor Swift perform “Eras Tour” shows and the Kentucky Derby to an appearance in the American Century Championship and the announcement of a “nice” role in the upcoming “Happy Gilmore 2” for the 34-year-old.
And once the Chiefs open their regular season with a Week 1 game against the Ravens on Sept. 5, they’ll attempt to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.
Kelce collected 984 yards — the first time he failed to top 1,000 receiving yards in a season since 2015 — and five touchdowns before adding another 355 yards and three scores, respectively, against the Dolphins, Bills, Ravens and 49ers in the postseason.
